I am frequently asked for recommendations of iPad apps for learners with Profound and Multiple or Severe Learning Difficulties to explore cause and effect. Here’s the latest list of useful apps to start with, the majority of which are free.
The first list of cause and effect apps combine visuals and audio, and can be used independently or co-explored. Fluidity and the Goldfish pond are very calming and can be accessed with the whole hand. Apps such as Pogg, Fun Bubbles Lite and I Hear Ewe are good for improving fine motor skills and targeting.
The music apps are great for learners with visual impairment to explore different sounds. The exploration apps are more suitable for learners with more developed motor skills and cognition, and are great for developing communication around a topic. There are a large number of the Toca Boca apps which are mostly paid apps – however these are beautifully designed, are open-ended (there’s no right or wrong way to interact with them) and great for talking about social situations such as having your hair cut, going to hospital or having tea party.
There are huge numbers of excellent apps out there – please leave your favourites in the comments.
